German WW2 Army Artillery Oberstleutnant Tunic

Very nice tunic in the early style with 8 buttons and slash lower pockets.

These officer tunics were mainly worn but soldiers also serving during WW1.

Show some small repairs and wear but displays very well.

The wearer was very well decorated, the loops for the ribbon bar is 90 mm long and would contain atleast 6 awards.

On the pocket there is sewn holes for awards and below the pocket as well.

Inside with dagger/sword hanger.

Collar tabs are machine sewn.

Eagle is a very nice, hand embroided with typical silver metallic threads.

Inside is a paper note, we can't read the hand writing unfortunately.

Now to the interesting part.

The 183rd Artillery rank had a commander and Oberst named Werner von Gallwitz (1893-1944).

He became Oberstleutnant: 1 April 1937 and became the commander for this regiment 1939.

1940 he was promoted and ended as a Generalleutnant. It's more than likely that he got himself a new tunic when he was promoted to Oberst. Gallwitz was killed in action 1944.

So It's is very likely that it was his tunic and the numbers and the rank pips were added when he became the commander of the new battalion before his promotion of 1940. Read more on the link below.
