The SA-Wehrmannschaften (SA Military Training Defense Units) were specialized paramilitary pre- and post-military training formations operated by the Sturmabteilung (SA) in Nazi Germany from 1939 through the end of World War II.
Context & Formation
After the "Night of the Long Knives" in 1934, the SA lost its dominance as a main political force, and the regular Wehrmacht (German Army) held the exclusive right to bear arms. However, in January 1939, Adolf Hitler issued a decree tasking the SA with overseeing compulsory pre-military and post-military refresher training for all German men non-eligible for immediate armed forces service. To fulfill this mandate, the SA created the SA-Wehrmannschaften.
Key Roles and Functions

Pre-Military Training: Trained youth and men who had not yet been drafted into the Wehrmacht in basic marksmanship, fieldcraft, physical conditioning, map reading, and military drill.

Post-Military Refresher & Reserves: Conducted ongoing training for older men or those in deferred essential war industries, keeping them in a state of military readiness.

Civil Defense & Home Guard: Assisted in local defense, anti-partisan duties (particularly in annexed regions), air-raid protection, and guarding sensitive infrastructure during the war.

Late-War Service: As manpower depleted toward the end of WWII, many Wehrmannschaften units were absorbed into local defense detachments or the Volkssturm (People’s Militia).
Uniforms and Insignia
Unlike standard SA stormtroopers who wore traditional brown shirts and kepi caps, members of the SA-Wehrmannschaften typically wore field-grey or military-style olive/brown-green combat uniforms adapted with SA rank insignia, armbands, and specific sleeve patches (a stylized "W" symbol) to denote their military training role.
