HISTORY:

On August 23, 1914, the German Supreme Army Command decided to establish an Expeditionary Corps Flanders from marines. However, the course of the war on the Western Front soon made it clear that marine infantry would be needed to provide permanent support to the field army. Therefore, the Marine Corps Flanders was formed. In November 1914, it consisted of two marine divisions, with a third added in June 1917. The unit proved its worth throughout the World War, sometimes in very tough combat. The commander of the “Marine Corps Flanders” was Admiral Ludwig von Schröder, who became known by the nickname “Lion of Flanders.”
