Design Elements

  • The Inscription: Around the inner oval, it reads REICHSBUND DEUTSCHER KLEINGÄRTNER.

  • The Center: It features a large, stylized German national eagle clutching a swastika, identifying it as an official state-approved organization of the era.

  • The Background: The green textured background represents the nature and gardening theme of the organization.

  • The Border: An oval-shaped wreath made of oak leaves borders the entire badge, which was a traditional German symbol of achievement and endurance

The Reichsbund Deutscher Kleingärtner (RDK) was an organization formed during the Third Reich to centralize and control Germany’s vast network of allotment gardens (community gardens where urban families grew vegetables and spent leisure time).

Under the Nazi policy of Gleichschaltung (coordination/forced alignment), all independent pre-existing gardening clubs were absorbed into this single state-run association. The regime highly valued allotment gardeners because they contributed significantly to Germany’s agricultural self-sufficiency (Autarkie).
