HISTORY:

The Reich Working Group for Vocational Education was established as part of the Nazi policy of Gleichschaltung (coordination) to standardize and ideologically align vocational training and qualification across various economic sectors. The hotel and restaurant industry, as an important component of the service sector with direct customer contact, was considered particularly significant. The profession of service master required not only technical competence but also representative qualities that corresponded to the regime's expectations.

The master badge served multiple purposes: on one hand, it was proof of a successfully completed master examination and thus documented the bearer's professional qualification. On the other hand, it functioned as a status symbol within the professional group and toward the public. The assignment of individual bearer numbers enabled central registration of all qualified professionals, which was characteristic of the bureaucratic penetration of all areas of life in the Third Reich.
